Corner of Sun*: A handsome man from Foreign Trade University “converts” to a developer, realizing his destination at Sun Asterisk.
It is common knowledge that IT workers must graduate from IT specialized universities. Indeed it is not wrong yet does not mean there are no exceptions, which is not hard to notice at Sun*. H. Tuan Thinh (EUV1) is an interesting case in point.
As a member who has only joined Sun* for almost 4 months, Thinh has been recognized by many team members in the project and his leaders as a relatively skillful-coding dev. However, what is more surprising is probably that Thinh had never coded before. He has never been a formal and well-trained student in coding in particular and technology in general. In other words, Thinh had never been a part of the field of IT.
It is known that Thinh is a graduate with excellence from Foreign Trade University (FTU) - one of the most prestigious business universities in Vietnam. Previously belonging to economics major with a strength of language, Thinh has tried many different jobs from teaching, sales, real estate sales, translation, to reading ghost stories audio on the radio. Having not found out his true passion and not knowing what is cut out for him, ultimately, Thinh decided to try everything.
As we all know, doing more than one job has its own pros and cons. The cons is that getting promoted is difficult. Yet to Thinh, after every job, Thinh has understood himself a little more, knowing what is important to him. According to Thinh, there were times when he had a job and was climbing the ladder, the income is sufficient for his personal needs. However, at that time, on waking up every morning, he felt demotivated and unwilling to go to work.
Thereafter, the foreign trade student at that time began to dream about a job that he could do all day without getting bored. Thinh said: "At that time, I remembered that when I was in high school, I really liked studying Informatics, specifically Pascal Programming. I liked it so much that when I got home I discovered more by myself though without any particular purposes". And that was when he realized his destiny with programming.
Thinh is a person who likes to work by rules and prefers logical reasoning. Hence to him, learning programming languages is quite easy and much more fun than common communication language. "Programming languages have strict rules of right and wrong, while in communicative languages it is better not to question about types of rules" - Thinh laughed.
Thinh started from the basics of programming as well as taking courses on Udemy, then gradually immersed himself in lectures designed for working students and later applied the knowledge acquired to coding. . That is why each product leaves Thinh with an indescribable sense of happiness. And so, when his knowledge and skills became much better, Thinh began to find a new direction on the journey of becoming an elite programmer.
Thinh shared: "I get the feeling of forgetting about the time when I sit to code and watch my products gradually finished. It is extremely satisfying and thrilling. Though coding from morning to night, on Saturday, Sunday or overnight, I still feel energetic. Therefore I decided to quit my old job and switch to working as a developer to enjoy that feeling every day."
When he started to switch to the IT field, like many other people working in a field that is different from what they have learnt, Thinh also had many concerns about choosing a place to help him both study, work and develop himself in the best way.
Sun* is the destination that Thinh has chosen to nurture his passion for code. According to Thinh, working for Sun* is also a predestined event that he did not expect.
However, Thinh also shared"When I started looking for a job in a whole new field, there were a lot of companies that were hiring the position I aspire, yet Sun* was the one that impressed me the most. Sun* requires a CV, English and Vietnamese proficiency and cover letter, and most importantly does not require graduation from computer programming specialized universities like other companies. It proved me that Sun* has a professional and modern way of evaluating candidates, not rigidly relying on not-too-important factors. As a person who likes working with clear rules, I feel Sun*'s professionalism suits me."
Until now, after almost 4 months at Sun* family, Thinh has learned a lot and become familiar with the working environment here. He has participated in the project of the field he studies as well as been challenged with many different tasks in project.
Over a year of learning and coding, to Thinh, is not a long time yet it has offered Thinh all different levels of emotions. As mentioned above, although his experience with coding is limited, Thinh is recognized by the team members and leaders in the project as a skillful developer. On mentioning this, Thinh does not think that it is due to his innate ability or luc but derived from his focus and "mindset" that he creates by himself.
Experiencing many fields also creates more firm belief in what he is doing. Now, Thinh no longer cares about whether he is doing the right job or not so he can focus all on improving his own coding ability. Although he is not a perfectionist, Thinh always wants his job to be of good quality because he firmly believes that the quality of his work is a reflection of his own self.
Thinh shared enthusiastically : "Because I am an outsider of the IT field, I know that I need to try harder to ensure the quality of work. During my first time coding, besides completing tasks at the company, I used to spend more time refactoring code, and also reading more about best practices to improve the quality of my code. Recently, I mainly read more documents of other technologies to expand the scope of knowledge. Due to a bit of background in English, I carried out research quite smoothly. Every day I feel happy to know more, to learn more, and to see that I am better than the day before."
Choosing to follow the code and Sun* as a destination, to Thinh, is the right choice and offers him a sense of happiness. Now, he has found the right path for himself and he wishes to continue to experience Sun*'s working environment, enjoying the excitement of coding and especially the enjoyment of watching how the baby of my project team gradually shapes because his biggest goal in the future is to together with the members in the project team complete products with good quality and make customers feel really satisfied with their services.
In addition, as a person who loves to dig deeply to explore new things in life, Thinh still spends time improving his technical knowledge, improving his capacity to become a truly trustworthy developer!
