Using Kubernetes in unleashing the open infrastructure potential

OpenInfra Days is a global event hosted by the OpenStack community. The scale and influence of this event has reached further out to the tech companies. Participants coming to OpenInfra Days with the hope to catch up with the trending issues like: Cloud, NFV, SDN CI/CD, Machine Learning, Big Data, IoT...to acquire useful information for application into work as well as research. 

2019 is the second year OpenInfra Days 2019 came to Vietnam. This is an official event with the support from the global OpenStack Foundation. The theme of OpenInfra 2019 is "Unleash the open infrastructure potential”.

In this year event, there were 500 participants, 40 speakers, 20 topics...tech experts, IT company managers, software engineers, university students. Sun Asterisk also sent representatives from the Infra unit and stakeholders to the event to get updates on the latest trends, improve expertise and increase networking with the community. 

Notable features in the event

Coming back from OpenInfra Days 2019, Sunners view it as a fascinating "feast" with a lot of noteworthy specialties. The organizer has achieved great success with promoting the opportunities of OpenStack, Container in Vietnam; Connecting community - company - university; Introducing usecases built on open source system.

Topics in the event focus on discussing issues like: Cloud Computing, SDN, NFV, AI, Big Data, Machine Learning...based on trending open platforms and solutions like: OpenStack, Opendaylight, OPNFV, K8S, CEPH, Prometheus, ELK stack, Graylog, Terraform.

Unleashing the open infrastructure potential with K8s

Topic 4 (Micro Service Architect in K8S in ZaloPay Merchant Platform) was considered the best topic in this event by Mr. Le Tuan Minh (Infra - Unit 1). The speakers have presented many valuable lessons on the mindset and application of technical solutions (K8s).

The research presents the issue of improving the eSale software (selling computer room, game, mobile cards) to support effective Top-up and statistics. This software was built 10 years ago, and is now facing many issues like scale, failure to process tasks (like adding a business), hard to maintain... 

Speaker intends to solve the issue by clear structuring of the following categories: 

- Before: Desktop -> Web server via Rest API, all information in 1 DB MSSQL, Business logic within store procedure. One big system

- After: 3 parts: 

- Problem: Communication complicated + Hard to deploy.

- Solutions: 

• Container + K8s
• Scaling
• Simple deploy
• Transfer cv from operator to dev
• Use TiDB for transaction
• ActiveMQ to insert/update card
• Kafka for report
• Grpc to communicate between components
• HA Proxy for loadsharing and loadblancer for K8s
• Kubespray to add/remove node.

“The presentation is a great reference material on both technical and mindset in future system deployment and operation: The mindset of switching from regular system to K8s must stem from demand, not trend; Reduce risks via operator by design your own process for the system; Make priorities of process for general efficiency; Use GRPC to communicate between components." - Mr. Minh commented.

Also in this event, Nguyen Van Vuong (Unit 3) also commented: “In Vietnam, applying open infrastructure is still under development and currently on the rise. Most companies that apply open infra has large scales or telecommunication business. Docker, Kubernetes, Rancher and open source technologies are also collaborating with OpenStack to build Open Infrastruct. With the experience and results from VietOpenStack Days 2018 - the organizer and the supporters had thorough preparations right from the start to create an useful and practical events. In general, OpenInfra Days 2019 was a success for touching upon the general demand of many, helping participants with easy approach to information, especially using Kubernetes in unleashing the open infrastructure potential.
